GPS Button

The GPS button is located at the bottom right of the screen. It is the left hand icon of the two buttons.

The GPS icon shows a number of states as described below:

Off state:

Initially, the GPS will be in the off state:

The first time you turn the GPS on, you might well get a message similar to the one below

This is OMN asking you to instruct your operating system to allow OMN access to your location. If you don't grant this permission, OMN can't be given position updates from your phone, and OMN therefore can't act as a GPS for you. Android and iOS have this sort of system in place for your security - each time we need a permission we have to ask for it, and therefore justify why we need it.

Tap the button once and the GPS activity will become active (On). On start up you will most likely get the following with an orange centre

GPS ON – LOCATION POOR OR DELAYED

This indicates that OMN GPS location is ON, but has not had a GPS position from your device in the last 60 seconds with an accuracy better than 10m.

Once your device has acquired a good GPS lock your GPS signal will stabilise, and you will get the next icon:

GPS ON – GOOD POSITION FIX

On some devices the orange state may be skipped and the system may go straight to the green icon state.

This green centre indicates that your device has a good GPS fix with a reported accuracy of 10m or better.

In both of the GPS ON states, as you move on the ground, your location remains centred and the map moves beneath.

To turn the GPS off, simply tap the button again once.

Whilst walking, you may well wish to move the map to see further along your route.

To do this, move the map with your finger as you normally would. The GPS will keep updating your position on the map, but it will stop moving the map to keep your position central to the screen.

Note: This allows you to move the map to view say further along your route. Whilst in this mode, the map ceases to automatically move so that subsequent GPS readings do not interrupt your selected viewing.

In this off-centred mode, the GPS icon will change to one of the following:

GPS ON – LOCATION POOR OR DELAYED, LOCATION IS OFF-CENTRE

GPS ON – GOOD POSITION FIX, LOCATION IS OFF-CENTRE

The orange or green centre as before indicates the quality of the current GPS fix.

The four inward facing arrows on the icon indicate your current location is off-centre, and that if you now tap the icon, it will re-centre the view of your position on the map. OMN will then continue to track you and move the map as you move.

There are some variations on this button/icon that become active when a tracklog is being recorded. These are covered in the tracklog help text.
